What on Earth is the Point of it All? – An Apology

Praise God for correction. I need to apologize for recent post, that had a title that went a little too far. In wanting the shock factor, I think I definitely strayed into Romans 14:13 territory, and probably a little farther. I am so thankful for co-laborers to come along side and gently commend and correct. This dear friend preferred to remain to nameless, but his point was this:

My small point is that you do yourself and the Truth a disservice and provide an unnecessary distraction by using language considered profane. You gain nothing and probably lose some respect for the amazing Truth of the Glorious Gospel of Christ. … Our “cursing” is not in the language of the Bible. Hell is a serious Biblical topic. Society uses the same word as a profanity. – A very wise friend

Absolutely right. I appreciate this correction and can confirm that something didn’t feel quite right in my conscience when typing those words. The ultimate purpose of our words should be to glorify THE Word which this post was all about, so I want to ask my readers for forgiveness.

I will repost this here, under a new title:

What on Earth is the Point of it All?

In the beginning was the logos… – John 1:1

We all know there is so much more to this passage, but let’s just stop here for a second. What does this mean? Well this text goes on to explain that the Logos was the historical person Jesus Christ.

So what does this mean? Why the word logos?

Well we translate “logos” as “word” into english, but this does a disservice to what this greek term means, and especially what it meant in the culture of the day. The logos is the meaning or argument behind the word. So in the beginning was a meaning, an argument, a reason. This wasn’t a foreign concept at the time.

So again what is the logos?

Well it was used as a technical term in philosophy, beginning with Heraclitus (ca. 535–475 BC), who used the term for a principle of order and knowledge.
The Stoic philosophers identified the term with the divine animating principle pervading the Universe, and the interesting thing was… they couldn’t figure it out. They couldn’t find the logos on their own, so as far as I understand… they had basically given up looking by the time Christ had come. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logos)

So we need to grasp something here… in the beginning… before everything… there was meaning. There was a point to it all. There is a point to everything that happens in this world. This is how John starts his Gospel. And here is the amazing thing… what was the meaning? Jesus Christ. This starts to make even more sense of this other verse about Jesus:

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. – Colossians 1:15

All things were created through Him, and for Him. For Him. All things. For Him. Everything… not some things, not most things… but all things. That includes me. I was made for Jesus Christ. That includes you… you were made for Jesus Christ.

Now there is so much here, but I want to highlight just 2 implications of this.

To Christians…
Any doctrine that isn’t interpreted in light of THE meaning behind all things… any doctrine that doesn’t at its absolute centre come back to the thought that the only reason anything makes any sense at all… is because of THE meaning. What is THE meaning behind all things? What is the Truth? “I am the way, and the Truth and the life.” So if our doctrine doesn’t point Christ, then throw it out. He is the litmus test. And please understand that I am not preaching at anyone here but myself, as I am so guilty of this. I am the “church kid, pastors kid” who has all these doctrines floating around without any meaning. This fact and this alone must be the rock that I stand on: In the beginning, there was a meaning and purpose for everything, and that meaning and purpose was Jesus Christ.

To Everyone else…
if you feel like there must be a meaning for you, if you ever wonder why on earth you’re even here, I challenge you to put Christ to the test. If this historical person was walking around saying stuff like, “I am truth” and “before Abraham was, I Am”, and his words have endured for thousands of years, then maybe this is something worth looking into… maybe there is meaning in life. Maybe there is meaning in suffering. Maybe it all has a purpose. Look… even our cursing is couched in the language of the Christian Religion. As in “What the Hell?” Again I challenge you, if someone came and said, “I am the meaning” and people actually believed him and said, “Wow, yes indeed you are…” isn’t that at least intriguing enough to look into? I think so, that’s why I’m going to keep writing… I challenge you to keep reading.

Or not…
Or just go around having your nice safe doctrines and your pat answers…
Or go on having your meaningless life.
It’s your choice.
