You can cry mercy all you want… but no one is listening…

You can cry mercy all you want… but no one is listening… It’s just you… Screaming into a void.
– Meredith Grey (Thursday Oct 3rd)

There is no hope in this world. There is only petty distractions, numbing “play”, fleeting-featherweight-fantasies. We are terrified of silence, blind to the eternal and dead to joy.

Meredith is right: There is no mercy, just the crushing dread of our mortality.

All is vanity…

Cursed is this ground…

Creation subjected to futility…

Meredith is right, unless…

Romans 8:20 (ESV) For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope

Hope? What hope? Who subjects a creation to futility against the creation’s will? And for hope? What is this hope that is worth subjecting a whole creation to?

Romans 8:21 (ESV) that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

Freedom from corruption? No more death? No more pain? This can’t be! The world is futile, fallen, sinking towards oblivion, groaning…

Romans 8:22 (ESV)  For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now.

Childbirth? Could it be that something wonderful will indeed come from all this pain? A new life for creation?

Romans 8:23 (ESV) And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

Yes we groan right along with creation. Set us free! We need to be set free, delivered! We need nothing short of salvation, for creation and for ourselves as well… Is there indeed a hope?

Romans 8:24 (ESV) For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?

It’s coming! Salvation is on the horizon, we have the firstfruits, the bud of new life on the tree, the downpayment and guarantee is in our possession… This is a real hope! Come Lord Jesus, save us wretched though we are, rescue us into the hope you have called us.

Romans 8:25 (ESV) But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.

So we trust… And walk by faith, not by sight. For it is written, the righteous by faith, shall live.

Hope is faith in future grace.

It’s the fuel on which the lives of the redeemed operates. Hope is the power to love with reckless abandon:

Romans 8:32 (ESV)  He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things?

That’s a hope you can die for…

So I dare you to cry mercy… There is someone listening…

But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The LORD is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” – Lamentations 3:21-24 (ESV)

The old hymn had it right:

When all around my soul gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.
