The 5 Words Jesus Never Said

The funniest statements are often the most profound:

We were having dinner years ago, and laughing and having a good time as a family. My youngest brother got “snarky” about something towards my dad, which I’m sure my dad deserved in part. It was all good family dinner time fun. As a retort to my brother’s witty comment, my dad responded with the 5 funniest words I have ever heard, because they seemed so true:

“Shut up… I made you!”

Which is so funny, because it is so true, and yet so false…

Fast forward 10 years to me on Skype with a student, proctoring a quiz for interim marks, and I see this statement on his T-shirt:

Life isn’t about finding yourself
Life is about creating yourself

How nice that sounds. Go make your own destiny. Be whoever you want to be. You can do it! Follow your dreams!

What a profound lie… what a serpent-eden lie.

Who are you?

1 Day.
3 Questions.
3 Posts:

Who is God?
Where is Christ?
Who am I?

Do you know who you are?

I do!

Here is a little bit of it:

I am…

A gospel centred
Tongue talking, Spirit Filled Pentecostal
Who is reformed in his theology

And who’s favorite worship leader is a  Canadian Charismatic Catholic!

And this is all due to me being a…

Treasure/Pleasure seeking Christian hedonist.

My treasure is Christ.
My pleasure is to put him on a pedestal in everything I do…
To show how beautiful He is to the world!!!

So that’s me… there I am…

So now the 3rd question…

Who are you?

Ask, and it will be given to you…

3 Questions – Humpty Dumpty

Since it’s Easter, and everyone is hunting for egg’s, I want to hunt for some truth, in a story about an egg. In fact, I see the entire Christian life, as a hunt for treasure… a searching for Christ in every story and situation. So I am ok with “treasure hunts” on Resurrection Day because they become an analogy for the great treasure hunt of our lives: Looking for Christ crucified for our sins, and raised to new life in Christ.

So without any more further ado… a story about new life:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall Humpty Dumpty had a great fall All the kings horses and all the king's men Couldn't put Humpty together again

Who is God?
Where is Christ?
Who am I?

Why was Humpty up on a wall? Didn’t he know that eggs should not lift themselves up to high places? Humpty Dumpty was pushed! I don’t care who you are, it is never our job to lift ourselves up. Nebuchadnezzar? King of Babylon? Eat grass, saith the Lord!

Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.
– Proverbs 16:18

I think we need to hear the conclusion to the story:

Then one of them said,
Men… Humpty is dead
Let’s scoop up this mess
For the king only can bless
Men… why have we forgot
He makes life where there’s not
So all the kings horses and all the king’s men
Brought Humpty to the king, who put him together again.

Ok so my poetry isn’t the greatest, that’s not my gifting. However, I think the meaning is clear…

Resurrection is the king’s work!

So… why were the king’s horses and men, trying to do his work? Scoop up the pieces, and bring them to Christ… the true King! It’s the church’s job to go find proud people who lift themselves up, knock them over if need-be, and bring them to the king. Then once they see their broken lives hanging on the cross they will be humbled and healed. It’s our job to love them in their brokenness. To get our hands dirty loving, and our feet bruised bringing the good news. This is how we bring people to Christ. By going to find people who have fallen off the wall, and then to bring them to the king, the only one who can heal.

“It’s my job to tell them, it’s God’s job to save them.”
– Arnold Kalamen.

How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!”
– Romans 10:14,15

I am amazed how God takes what was intended for evil, and shows that he intended it for good. (Genesis 50:20) Case and point: I love how God take a show who’s name literally violates the first commandment, and is using it to produce artists who sing for His glory?

I am of course speaking of American Idol, a show who’s one purpose is to give America and its people someone to worship. And worship they do.

And yet, the greatest, most acclaimed idol ever is Carrie Underwood, who quite unashamedly gives glory to God in her music, and speaks of Him in her concerts. There has been a long train of Idols that have gone on to careers in Christian Music. But even better is someone who can sing the truth, incognito, and have massive popular appeal, without being “pushy”. He get’s to leave that job to us, which I love! It’s the neighbor’s job to love with God’s love, not always just the singer on the stage.

So without any further ado, this is from Phillip Phillips, 2012’s winner of American Idol. This is my favorite song of the last month, and a great music video. Take a look at it, and I’ll tell you how the video gets it wrong, but how the song can get it right:

Now musically this was my favorite from an incredible album… (seriously, buy it right now! Open up iTunes or Amazon or drive to Walmart and buy it!) but it was bugging me a little bit, lyrically. This usually means I haven’t cracked the code yet, but when I came back to it, and applied my 9 word encryption key… it opened up. And now I can’t stop singing it, can’t stop preaching from it, and need some people to help me act out the true story of this song for the world!

What was bothering about this song?

3 Questions Worth Asking… for the Rest of Your Life

I feel that if I was to pass from this earth today, and could leave one thing behind for my family and friends to discover, it’s to ask these 3 questions. For the rest of your life, until you find the answers, never stop asking these questions. And once you find the answers somewhere, be who you are, and then go somewhere else so you can keep asking them. Let these 3 questions, only 9 words, change your life:

Who is God?
Where is Christ?
Who am I?

Asking these 3 questions, in this order, of every text I encounter in the Bible, has helped me make sense some of the most difficult passages of scripture. When I stopped asking “Where am I” and started seeking Christ, and looking for Him… an amazing thing started to happen:

I started to find him…
